Settling into the mind of an AP English student.

As junior year ends, we are persuaded into believing that our three years in high school molded us into exceptional readers and that all of our writings are on point. However, that’s not the case for senior year as we are forced to put behind our custom thinking process in order to occupy new and improved college level skills.
I seriously need to read more books.
One of our very first assignments as a class was to go through Norma Wilkerson’s list of book titles from all of the AP English open response questions from the year 1971 to the present. After going through the list, I encountered only three book titles I knew well, and mind you, two out of the three, Song of Solomon and Crime and Punishment, were books that were assigned for the summer reading. The third book, Lord of the Flies, was just a book I read in my freshmen year I was really drawn into. As I went through the list, I also came across book titles I read years ago. I don’t remember the characters’ names, or the significance of the book as a whole or any other recurring questions that are normally asked in a given prompt question. I’m beginning to see a very long journey ahead of me through the AP English course I am currently enrolled in and needless to say, I have to refresh my memory on each book material in a flash. And the only ten books I was intrigued by were the ones my friends and teachers had recommended and that was that. All of the other book titles seemed unexciting to me and the titles did not call out my name.
Based on these results, I can see and I know that I am not the best reader and reading books for fun is not quite my specialty. Part of the reason I decided to take a sizzling bite into AP English was to challenge myself into getting out of my comfort zone I refuse to let go. I would like to become a reader who enjoys picking up a book to read once in a while without anyone telling me to do so. I desire to analyze text from readings and to understand it in my own original perspective so that I can enjoy reading books instead of it being a burden. Hopefully with the many practices our class will be given an opportunity to do, I will gradually better myself into being a great reader as opposed to my lack of interest in reading at the commencement of the new school year.
It's going to be challenging at times, but I think I got this.
